Helldivers 2 Common Samples spawn on every difficulty. The wiki counts 12 to 15 per mission on Trivial, rising to a flat 40 from Impossible (difficulty 8) upward. You can hold 500. Maxing all 30 ship modules costs 3,830, which is 96 perfect 40-sample extractions, or 13 missions to fill the cap. Two boosters, Sample Extricator and Sample Scanner, add extra.
Arrowhead does not publish a sample table, so the per-mission counts, caps and booster effects below come from the community-run Helldivers Wiki sample page and its mission and booster pages, checked on October 2, 2026. Mission time limits are what the in-game mission briefing shows. Patch changes come from Arrowhead’s own notes. The mission counts and hours are our own arithmetic from those figures.
This page is about speed and totals. If you want to know what Common Samples look like and which structures hold them, read our guide on where to find samples first.
How many Common Samples each difficulty gives per mission
The wiki lists how many Common Samples a map generates at each difficulty. These counts apply to Expedition and other non-Defense missions, and they are what the map places, not a guaranteed haul. The wiki adds that Terminid missions tend to place the fewest.
| Difficulty | Common Samples per mission | Missions to fill the 500 cap | Missions for all 3,830 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 – Trivial | 12–15 | 34–42 | 256–320 |
| 2 – Easy | 14–17 | 30–36 | 226–274 |
| 3 – Medium | 15–18 | 28–34 | 213–256 |
| 4 – Challenging | 21–25 | 20–24 | 154–183 |
| 5 – Hard | 25–29 | 18–20 | 133–154 |
| 6 – Extreme | 30–35 | 15–17 | 110–128 |
| 7 – Suicide Mission | 36–40 | 13–14 | 96–107 |
| 8 to 10 – Impossible, Helldive, Super Helldive | 40 | 13 | 96 |
The last two columns are ours: the wiki’s counts divided into 500 and 3,830, rounded up. They assume you extract with every Common Sample the map generates and spend none on anything else, so treat them as the best case.
Two things stand out. Common Samples stop rising at 40 from Impossible upward, so going past difficulty 8 adds nothing for Commons alone. And the jump from Medium to Challenging (difficulty 3 to 4) is one of the biggest steps, from 15–18 to 21–25, and it is also where Rare Samples start. Our difficulty levels guide covers what else changes at each step, including how you unlock the higher ones.
Which difficulty is best for farming Common Samples
Nobody has published a side-by-side timing test of Common Samples per hour at each difficulty, so we can’t name one as the fastest. What the wiki does show is the trade-off.
- Higher difficulty, more Commons per run. Impossible places 40 against Medium’s 15 to 18, a little over twice as many for one drop.
- Higher difficulty, bigger maps and more enemies. The wiki’s difficulty page says map size grows with difficulty, more objectives and outposts appear, and enemy patrols spawn more often. That means more walking and more fighting between samples.
- Rare and Super Samples come along for free. Rares start at Challenging (4) and Supers at Extreme (6). If you also need those for ship modules, a higher difficulty farms all three at once.
The practical answer for most players is the highest difficulty your squad can clear and extract from reliably. A failed extraction costs every sample you carried, which is worse than a slower, safer run. If your squad is comfortable on Extreme or Suicide Mission, you are already within a few samples of the 40 ceiling.
One more rule from the wiki makes squads worth it: Common and Rare Samples are shared, so every Helldiver who extracts gets the full amount the squad brought out. Four players searching the map collect faster, and nobody splits the total.
Samples PackIf 96 perfect 40-sample extractions for 3,830 Common Samples sounds like too much, this pack adds samples without the runs.No account login · just your friend codeFrom $5.99View offerShort missions vs full missions for Common Samples
Mission length matters as much as difficulty, because the timer caps how long Super Destroyer support remains before emergency extraction begins. These limits come from the mission briefings recorded on the wiki:
| Mission type | Time limit | Common Samples |
|---|---|---|
| Standard missions (for example Spread Democracy, Purge Hatcheries) | 40 minutes | Full table above |
| Evacuate High-Value Assets (Hard and up) | 20 minutes | 10, added in patch 7.1.0 |
| Eradicate Terminid Swarm / Automaton Forces | 15 minutes | 10–15, fixed by the map layout |
| Blitz: Search and Destroy | 12 minutes | Not listed separately by the wiki |

Arrowhead’s Devoid of Liberty 7.1.0 patch notes from September 22, 2026 say Evacuate High-Value Assets now has 10 Common Samples to collect throughout the mission. Before that patch the wiki says it had next to none.
The wiki’s sample table covers Expedition and non-Defense missions and does not give a separate count for Blitz maps, so how many Commons a Blitz run holds is Not confirmed. Many farming guides recommend Blitz for its short timer, but we found no published count to back up a per-hour comparison.
The full 40-minute missions are where the table’s top numbers apply. If you want the 40 Commons that difficulty 8 and up can give, a standard mission with time to sweep the map is the documented way to get them.
How long it takes to farm 500 or 3,830 Common Samples
The cap is 500, and the Fandom-hosted Helldivers Wiki’s Currencies page notes that once a currency is at its cap, no more of it is earned. Spend before you farm more, or the extra samples are wasted.
Maxing every ship module takes 3,830 Common Samples in total. Our ship module upgrade costs page breaks that into 1,380 for tiers 1 to 3, 1,050 for tier 4 and 1,400 for tier 5. No single upgrade costs more than the 500 you can hold, so the cap never blocks a purchase, but it does mean you farm and spend in rounds.

Here is the time side, worked out from the mission timer. On difficulty 8 or higher, 96 perfect extractions at 40 Commons each cover all 3,830. Multiplying 96 mission clocks by 40 minutes gives 64 hours on the mission timer. When the timer runs out, Mission Control deploys an emergency extraction shuttle, according to the wiki’s Mission Control voice lines, so extraction, loading and ship time all come on top. That makes 64 hours a timer count, not a total-playtime ceiling. Filling the 500 cap takes 13 such missions, or 8 hours 40 minutes on the mission clocks before extraction and other overhead.
The only player-reported rate we found is a single community source and is old. In an April 2024 Steam discussion, the original poster said a quick solo Challenging Eradicate run of about 10 minutes netted 10 samples. That is roughly one Common per minute. At that pace 3,830 would take about 64 hours, but the post is from before patch 7.1.0 and the Sample Scanner booster, and it describes one player’s solo runs.
Boosters that add extra Common Samples
Two boosters push your haul past what the map generates. Both effects below are from the wiki’s booster pages.
- Sample Extricator (Borderline Justice premium Warbond, page 3, 65 Medals): large enemies have a chance to drop Common Samples when they die, capped at 10 per mission. The wiki recommends it for Evacuate High-Value Assets and the Eradicate missions, where the map is small, and says it does little on low difficulties where large enemies rarely spawn.
- Sample Scanner (Masters of Ceremony premium Warbond, page 3, 65 Medals): a 15% chance to get twice the samples on each pickup, for every sample rarity.

By our arithmetic, a 15% chance of doubling works out to about 15% more samples on average over many pickups. On a 40-sample map that is about six extra. The wiki’s booster page says each Helldiver brings their own booster, up to four different ones per mission, so in a squad two players can run one each. Our full list of Helldivers 2 boosters shows where every booster comes from.
Small habits that speed up a Common Sample run
- Read the minimap. Small points of interest change their icon once every sample in them is collected, so an unchanged icon means something is still there. Most hold zero to three Commons each.
- Cancel the pickup animation. The wiki notes you can start sprinting while walking, or double-tap sprint while already sprinting, to cut the pickup animation short. It saves time when several samples sit in one spot.
- Protect the carrier. Samples held by a Helldiver who fails to extract are lost for the whole squad. Once a Helldiver boards the shuttle, the samples they carry transfer to it and are safe.
- Check the operation first. The Galactic War console shows which sample types an operation carries before you drop.
The minimap icons, the five Common Sample forms and the shuttle rule are all covered with pictures in the sample locations guide linked at the top of this page.
What to do with Common Samples once your ship is maxed
After all 30 modules are bought, Common Samples have one more use. The wiki says Helldivers can donate them to the Democracy Space Station (DSS) to charge its Tactical Actions, with Common Samples going to the Eagle Storm action, which sends Eagle strafing runs over missions on the planet the station orbits.

Each Helldiver can donate up to 75 Common Samples, 50 Rare Samples and 50,000 Requisition Slips per 24-hour cycle. The cycle starts with your first donation after your last cycle ended. Whether a donation drive is open depends on the current state of the Galactic War, so check the DSS in game.

What is the best difficulty to farm Common Samples in Helldivers 2?
No one has published a per-hour test. Common Samples per mission rise until Impossible (difficulty 8), where they reach 40 and stop rising, so the highest difficulty your squad extracts from reliably is the best-documented choice.
What is the Common Sample cap in Helldivers 2?
500. Once you are at the cap, any more you extract are not added, so spend them on ship modules first.
How many Common Samples do you need for all ship modules?
3,830 for all 30 upgrades, according to the wiki. That is 96 perfect extractions carrying 40 Commons each.
Do Common Samples split between squad members?
No. Every Helldiver who extracts gets the full amount the squad brought out.
How many Common Samples are in a Blitz mission?
Not confirmed. The wiki’s sample counts cover Expedition and non-Defense missions and do not list Blitz separately. Blitz: Search and Destroy has a 12-minute timer.
Is there a booster for more samples?
Yes, two. Sample Extricator lets large enemies drop up to 10 extra Commons per mission, and Sample Scanner gives a 15% chance to double each pickup.
