In MW4 DMZ you can Prestige an Operator once it earns 18 Trait Points (Onyx III Dog Tag). The first Prestige costs two Rare-or-better weapons with three attachment slots, a Rare plate carrier, a Rare backpack, four Rare 3D Printer Ingredients and 200,000 DMZ Cash. In return the Operator gets a random Permanent Prestige Trait, up to three in total.

Every rule in this guide comes from Activision’s DMZ Deep Dive, Part 2, published October 9, 2026, ahead of the October 23 launch. The game has not launched yet, so these numbers may still change. For the map and the mode as a whole, see our Modern Warfare 4 DMZ overview.

What DMZ Operator Prestige is

DMZ Operator Prestige is an optional reset for one Operator. It is separate from three other systems Activision lists: the standard level 1 to 55 player progression, the level 1 to 70 DMZ player progression, and the other MW4 Prestige systems. It belongs to a single Operator, not to your account.

You can Prestige an Operator only when it is on Active Duty and not MIA (Missing in Action). An MIA Operator has to be recovered first.

MW4 DMZ Prestige requirements, first to third Prestige

Every Prestige needs the same three things: 18 earned Trait Points on that Operator, specific gear equipped in its Loadout and Backpack, and DMZ Cash in your in-game Bank. The Trait Points do not have to be spent. The gear and cash requirements rise with each Prestige:

For the first Prestige, the blog’s checklist says the weapons and gear must be Rare “or higher,” so better gear also counts. The third-tier requirements stay in place for every Prestige after the third.

What you lose when you Prestige an Operator

Prestige is a real reset. When you confirm it:

  • All the required gear is removed from the Operator.
  • The DMZ Cash is deducted from your Bank.
  • The Operator’s Traits are removed and reset, and it starts earning Trait Points again from zero.

Activision’s infographic adds that “everything left on your operator will be consumed,” so move anything you want to keep out of the Backpack and Loadout before you press Prestige. That includes items beyond the required gear.

Permanent Prestige Traits: what you get

Each Prestige grants one random Permanent Prestige Trait, drawn from the available Trait pool. The rules:

  • Only that Operator gets it.
  • It stays on the Operator even if you dismiss them, move them to another Active Duty slot or change their Operator skin.
  • An Operator can hold up to three Permanent Prestige Traits.

You can keep prestiging after the third. From the fourth Prestige on, you are offered another Permanent Trait different from the three you have, and you either discard one of your three to take it or keep your three and discard the new one. Activision also says prestiging multiple Operators earns extra Calling Cards and other rewards it has not revealed yet.

How DMZ Operators reach 18 Trait Points

An Operator levels through its Dog Tag, which has 18 levels: Steel, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Damascus and Onyx, each in tiers I to III. You earn DMZ XP on a successful exfil, and each new Dog Tag level gives one Trait Point. A strong deployment can level the Dog Tag more than once. At Onyx III the Operator has 18 Trait Points and is fully leveled.

An Operator’s Dog Tag level and your overall DMZ player level are independent. The Dog Tag can also be taken: rival Operators who defeat you can loot it, and it comes back if you recover the MIA Operator.

The three Trait Trees

Trait Points go into three trees: Warfighter, Scout and Survivalist. Each tree has 22 Traits, 66 in total: six Major Traits that are always visible and 16 Minor Traits that are randomized. You pick one Trait per branch, and once picked it is locked in.

With 18 points, you can fully complete two trees (nine Traits each) or spread points across all three. A few of Activision’s example Major Traits:

  • Warfighter: Possum (once per match, self-revive into Last Stand from death), Viper Sense (hidden from thermal optics and AI targeting).
  • Scout: Investor (slightly more cash extracted), Thermal Padding (hidden from UAVs).
  • Survivalist: Free Revive (repairs your first Wound automatically), Die Hard (approaching an exfil in Last Stand calls it automatically).

Traits are what a Permanent Prestige Trait is drawn from, so these are the kinds of effects an Operator can keep for good.

MIA recovery cost grows with Traits

If an Operator is eliminated, they go MIA. You can pay DMZ Cash to recover them with all their Traits, but they come back without gear, and the more Trait Points they have, the more the recovery costs. You can also dismiss them and start a fresh Operator. That trade-off matters most just before Prestige, when an Operator has all 18 points.

How many Operators you can level at once

Everyone starts with two Active Duty Operator slots and can unlock another by raising their DMZ level. Vault Edition owners start with three. Each Operator earns its own Trait Points and can be prestiged separately. If you are buying before launch, DMZ Early Access opens on October 20 for digital pre-orders; our DMZ Early Access guide has the details, and our edition comparison covers the rest of the Vault Edition.

Modern Warfare 4 accounts and leveling help for DMZ

Operators reach 18 Trait Points through DMZ XP from successful exfils, and a third Active Duty slot lets you level another Operator in parallel:

Frequently asked questions

How much DMZ Cash does a DMZ Prestige cost?

200,000 for the first, 300,000 for the second, and 500,000 for the third and every one after.

Do I have to spend all 18 Trait Points before prestiging?

No. The Operator has to have earned 18 Trait Points; Activision says they do not need to be spent.

Does DMZ Operator Prestige reset my DMZ level?

No. Operator Prestige is separate from the level 1 to 70 DMZ player progression and resets only that Operator’s Traits.

Can I choose my Permanent Prestige Trait?

No. It is random. From the fourth Prestige on, you can choose whether to swap a new random Trait in or discard it.

Do I lose Permanent Traits if I change Operator skin?

No. They stay with the Operator through skin changes, slot changes and even dismissal.
