Apex Attachments are Modern Warfare 4’s final weapon unlock: you get a weapon’s Apex Attachment by maxing that weapon’s level. It goes in its own slot, does not use one of your normal attachment slots, and changes how the gun works. MW4 launches with 33 weapons and 28 Apex Attachments, up from 19 in the Beta, and most weapons get at least one.

The details come from Activision’s Call of Duty: NEXT multiplayer blog of August 21, 2026, which describes Apex Attachments as “final weapon progression unlocks that modify weapon behavior”. We also went through the two official Apex videos in that post frame by frame.

How to unlock Apex Attachments in MW4

Level the weapon to its maximum. Activision says an Apex Attachment is “unlocked as the final reward for maxing out a weapon”, so every other unlock on that gun comes first. Weapon level caps vary by weapon: Activision’s October 9 DMZ guide uses the M4 as an example with 72 levels, each showing its attachment and camo unlocks. The XP needed per level has not been published, so how long a weapon takes is Not confirmed until launch.

Four rules from Activision:

  • Apex Attachments are equipped separately from standard Gunsmith attachments and do not consume an attachment slot.
  • Each one adds “a distinct gameplay effect”, from close-range conversions to stealth setups.
  • They are optional: you can leave a maxed weapon without its Apex.
  • Weapon levels count across Multiplayer and DMZ, per the same DMZ guide. Whether levels earned during DMZ Early Access (from October 20) carry into launch is Not confirmed.

For a weapon that has an Apex, it sits at the very end of that weapon’s progression, so levelling is the whole grind. Our Modern Warfare 4 boosting page lists weapon levelling that goes up to max level and the Apex Attachment. Our MW4 weapon unlock levels table lists each launch weapon’s max level.

To see the camo challenges and known Apex Attachments for each weapon as you level it, use our free MW4 camo tracker, which lists the pre-launch data weapon by weapon.

Every MW4 Apex Attachment Activision has described

Activision’s blog describes seven Apex configurations and what they do:

WeaponApex AttachmentWhat it does (Activision)
Mojave .357 revolver“Outlaw”Custom single-action hammer for rapid fan-firing from the hip
Oris 8.6 marksman rifleUnnamed kunai sidesaddleThree quick-draw kunai alongside its 8.6 Blackout setup
Sang 9mm pistol“9&12”Side-break 12-gauge shotgun mounted to the frame
ISO Nightshade SMG“Hunter”Custom-tipped ammo with an optical display that marks enemies and tracks them behind cover, at the cost of velocity and penetration
X-58 NYX“Shroud”Low-signature stealth setup that minimizes firing visibility and conceals shot direction
M4 assault rifle“Hurricane”Converts to 5.7×28 with a P90-style magazine, an SMG-style setup
Kastov 762 assault rifle“ARC”Barrel-mounted jammer that disrupts enemy Killstreaks and equipment

The Oris kunai attachment has no name in the blog. The other 21 launch Apex Attachments have not been officially described in text.

Apex names shown in Activision’s Apex videos

The first Apex video in the post puts a name card on screen for each weapon and its Apex. We read five:

On-screen cardAlso described in the blog?
M4 HurricaneYes, the 5.7×28 SMG conversion above
Oris RazorThe blog describes an Oris 8.6 kunai sidesaddle but does not name it; whether “Razor” is that attachment is Not confirmed
Mosin-Nagant HarpoonNo
PPSh-41 EmberNo
ISO TraceNo

The second video tags five weapons with an “Apex Attachment” label without naming the attachment: the WZ.55 Striga, Krait PS8 Commando, Type 73 Assault, Rezi Enforcer and Sang 9mm. For the cards we have only names, Activision has not described what they do, so we have not guessed.

Community videos from the August Beta list more Apex Attachments by name. We have not used them here because Beta content can change before launch and the Beta had 19 of the 28.

MW4 weapon and attachment numbers at launch

ItemAt launchIn the Beta
Weapons33 (24 primary, 8 secondary, 1 melee)22
Apex Attachments2819
Standard attachmentsMore than 500Not stated

Activision also says “the majority of weapons launch with their own Apex Attachment (and occasionally more than one)”, which is why 28 Apex Attachments do not map one-to-one onto 33 weapons. Which weapons have none, and which have two, is Not confirmed.

Apex Attachments and Gunny

MW4’s other new Gunsmith feature is Gunny, short for Gunnery Sergeant. Activision says Gunny uses the attachments you have already unlocked to build close-range, balanced or long-range loadouts in one input. Combined with the new Weapon Progression, where an attachment unlocked once stays available “as you move from weapon to weapon”, Activision says this cuts down on redundant unlocks, but each weapon that has an Apex still has to be maxed to unlock it.
