Can You Get Banned for Bot Lobbies in MW4?

Activision never says bot lobby, but its Boosting rule covers farming XP and weapon levels, and the account holder takes the penalty whoever was playing.

Yes, it is possible. Activision’s Security and Enforcement Policy does not mention bot lobbies by name, but it defines Boosting as exploiting the game to gain XP, prestige or weapon level, and Spoofing as hiding your identity or hardware. Penalties run from warnings and limited matchmaking, where you may earn no progression, up to permanent and hardware bans. Nobody can guarantee a method is safe.

This guide quotes Activision’s Call of Duty Security and Enforcement Policy, which Activision Support updated on October 22, 2026, the day before Modern Warfare 4 launched. The different ways players try to get easier lobbies are covered in our how to get a bot lobby in MW4 guide; this page is only about the ban risk.

MW4 ban and penalty types

PenaltyWhat Activision says it meansAppeal
WarningIn-game warning instead of a penalty, depending on the infraction—
Limited matchmakingMatched with other flagged accounts; you and your party “may not earn progression”Not stated
Ranked Play restrictionCan last a season, several seasons or permanently; SR and rewards may be revoked; party members can be affectedNot stated
Temporary banLength varies with severityNo
Permanent banCan apply across past, present and future Call of Duty titles; may block buying CoD gamesYes, permanent bans only
Hardware banApplies to the device, not the account; blocks online playNo

On top of these, Activision lists extra penalties at its discretion, including a full reset of stats and weapon customizations, a full inventory reset, removal from leaderboards and revoked Call of Duty Points or items.

For a bot lobby, the penalty that matters most is limited matchmaking, because Activision says players in it “may not earn progression”, and XP, weapon levels and camos are why most people want an easy lobby. If you are weighing this risk against the grind itself, our Modern Warfare 4 bot lobbies page explains how ours are set up so you can judge them yourself: a hosted Multiplayer session against managed AFK player accounts, not a Private Match against the game’s built-in AI.

What Activision’s policy says about bot lobbies

“Bot lobby” is player slang for a match full of weak or inactive opponents. Activision said in its 2024 matchmaking explainer that Multiplayer does not use bots as part of general matchmaking, so a public “bot lobby” is real players. The policy never uses the term, but several of its infraction definitions can apply, and Activision says violations are not limited to the ones listed:

  • Boosting: “Exploiting the game for the purpose of gaining XP, prestige, game score, weapon level, or in-game unlock.”
  • Spoofing: “Any attempt to hide, disguise, or obfuscate your identity or the identity of your hardware devices.”
  • Circumventing Security: “Any attempt to circumvent our security systems.”
  • Glitching: “Abusing an exploit in game code or other established rule of play.”

Which of these Activision would apply to a given lobby is not stated anywhere. What the policy does make clear is who carries the risk: “The account holder is responsible for any infraction on the account. We apply penalties no matter who was playing at the time.” Penalties are tied to the Activision account and applied across every device linked to it.

VPNs, alt accounts and Private Match: what the policy covers

Activision does not rule on individual methods, so this is how the published definitions line up with each one. It is a reading of the policy, not an Activision ruling.

  • VPN. Activision has not said a VPN alone is banned. Its Spoofing definition covers hiding “your identity or the identity of your hardware devices”, and its Season 01 RICOCHET report for Black Ops 6 described ping thresholds in Ranked Play added “to cut down on VPN abuse”.
  • Reverse boosting or alt accounts. Deliberately losing to lower your skill, or playing on a fresh account, is not named in the policy. Throwing matches can fall under Griefing if it ruins games for teammates, and using lobbies to farm XP is the kind of thing the Boosting definition describes.
  • Private Match with bots. This is a game feature, not an exploit, and the bots are the game’s built-in AI. Whether MW4 Private Matches give XP or camo progress at launch is not confirmed. A hosted session against AFK player accounts is a different thing: those are real accounts in a normal Multiplayer match.
  • Someone else playing your account. The policy says penalties apply “no matter who was playing at the time”. That applies to account-sharing boosts as well as to friends.

RICOCHET and PC security checks in MW4

RICOCHET Anti-Cheat, Activision says, uses client- and server-side detection, monitors applications running during play, flags unusual gameplay with behavioural models and checks that hardware has not been tampered with. On PC, Infinity Ward’s Trello board also points players to Activision’s TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot guide, which is needed to pass Microsoft attestation checks.

These checks are aimed at cheats and tampering rather than at lobbies, but they mean Activision can see more about your hardware than in older games. PC requirements are in our MW4 system requirements guide.

How to lower the risk if you grind MW4

  • Keep your account to yourself. You are responsible for everything played on it.
  • Avoid anything that edits game files or memory. Activision’s policy singles out tutorials and services that “modify your camo or other game content” as cheating.
  • Watch for warnings. Activision says some infractions start with an in-game warning; read it and stop whatever triggered it.
  • Use the in-game tools that exist. Double XP tokens and Daily Challenges are the speed-ups Activision itself promotes; the free ones are listed in MW4 free Double XP tokens.

We have not seen MW4-specific enforcement data yet; the game launched on October 23, 2026. Whether MW4 uses tighter or looser skill-based matchmaking at launch is covered in does MW4 have SBMM.
