Yes, MW4 matchmaking takes skill into account, but Infinity Ward says it is not going back to the strict SBMM of older games. The August 2026 beta tested two setups: the new Classic system from Black Ops 7 Season 05, and an Open option that leaned more on connection. Activision has not said which setup MW4 will use at launch on October 23.
Here is what Activision and Infinity Ward have said, what the beta data showed, and what is still unconfirmed. If you are after easier matches for camos or a Nuke, see our MW4 bot lobbies.
Does Modern Warfare 4 have skill-based matchmaking?
Yes, in some form. Infinity Ward told players that every Call of Duty has looked at skill, including the original Black Ops and Black Ops 2, PCGamesN reported on August 20, 2026. Skill is one factor alongside location, time of day, playlist, party size, platform, crossplay settings and population.
The same report quotes the studio directly: “This is not a return to the tighter matchmaking of recent games.” Connection quality stays a top priority.

Classic vs Open matchmaking in the MW4 beta
Black Ops 7 Season 05, which started in July 2026, brought in a new matchmaking system that Treyarch said was inspired by “classic games” such as the original Black Ops and Black Ops 2, according to PCGamesN. For the MW4 beta, Activision said it would also offer Open matchmaking “so we can keep learning from both”.
- Classic: the new system. Dexerto describes it as similar to matchmaking in the original Black Ops and Black Ops II, and Treyarch says it adds smarter team balancing.
- Open: Black Ops 7’s earlier setup, where skill was only a small factor when building a lobby and connection mattered more.

Players and content creators pushed back, Dexerto and PCGamesN reported. One common argument was that Black Ops 7 data should not decide MW4 matchmaking, because the player base changes when a new game launches. Those are opinions, not measured data.
What the matchmaking data showed
On August 19, the official Call of Duty account shared Black Ops 7 numbers to explain the change, as Dexerto reported. For 80% of players, Open matchmaking compared with Standard matchmaking produced:
- 32.7% higher quit rates
- 14.4% fewer kills per minute
- 5.3% lower win rates
- 59.2% more “Not Fun” ratings
Activision said quit rates fell and search times improved after the new system went live in Season 05. These are Activision’s own figures, and it has not published the raw data. Its follow-up post, quoted by both outlets, summed up its position: “Matchmaking isn’t just data, it’s a feeling.”
Do MW4 lobbies stay together after a match?
No. Lobbies break up after each match. Activision said about half of players leave after the first match, and that almost none of the original lobby is left by game three. PCGamesN reports Infinity Ward is keeping that approach in MW4 to speed up matches and protect ping.
Some players argue the 50% figure is misleading, because people leave to prestige, change modes or skip a map. Activision has not responded to that point.
What matchmaking will MW4 use at launch?
Not confirmed. In May, CharlieIntel reported that Infinity Ward planned to explain the system fully before October 23, according to Destructoid. As of October 19, no launch matchmaking post has appeared on Activision’s blog. The launch roadmap lists maps and modes but no playlist types.

Things to check on launch day:
- Is there an Open playlist, and in which modes?
- Is there a setting to turn skill matching off? Activision has not announced one.
- Does the new Collateral mode use Classic or Open matchmaking?
Ranked Play is a separate, fully skill-based mode, and it has no date yet. Our MW4 Ranked Play guide covers when it is likely to arrive.
MW4 bot lobby services
Matchmaking decides who you face in public playlists. “Bot lobby” is player slang for a match where the opposition is much weaker than usual, and the term covers several different things. Our guide to bot lobbies explains them before you order. For the methods players try and their risks, see how to get a bot lobby in MW4.
