Activision has not announced a public bot lobby option for Modern Warfare 4. The routes players try are a playlist where skill counts less, off-peak hours, a VPN, reverse boosting or a fresh account, Private Match with bots, and hosted bot lobbies. Activision has not published MW4’s launch matchmaking rules for October 23, so none of these has been verified in MW4 yet.

Below is what each method involves, what Activision has actually said about it, and where the risks are. For the background on the term itself, see what a bot lobby is in Call of Duty. Our own MW4 bot lobbies are listed as Coming Soon until launch.

Do bot lobbies work in Modern Warfare 4?

Not testable yet. Multiplayer opens on October 23, 2026, and the only live MW4 matchmaking so far was the two-weekend beta, which Activision’s beta patch notes wrapped up on September 1. In that beta, Activision ran two setups side by side, as PCGamesN reported on August 20:

  • Classic: the system introduced in Black Ops 7 Season 05, which still considers skill. It was the default.
  • Open: a setup that leaned more on connection quality.

Infinity Ward told players the new approach “is not a return to the tighter matchmaking of recent games.” Which of the two ships on October 23, and whether an Open option survives, has not been announced as of October 20. Our MW4 SBMM guide tracks that question, and we will update this page once the launch playlists are live.

Method 1: Pick the playlist where skill counts less

If MW4 launches with an Open matchmaking playlist, choosing it is the simplest thing to try. It uses a normal menu option, and the matchmaker leans more on connection than on skill. Giving skill less weight does not guarantee easier opponents, though; results vary from player to player.

There is a precedent. Before Black Ops 7 launched, Activision’s beta patch notes said “Open Matchmaking with minimal skill consideration will be the default” at launch. MW4’s beta went the other way and made Classic the default. Check the playlist menu on October 23.

Method 2: Play at off-peak hours

Activision’s Matchmaking Intel white paper lists eight inputs for every lobby, and says connection and time to match matter most. Skill is one input, “not the driving force”. It adds that “players can only match with and against who is online, regardless of any system designed to form lobbies.”

So at quiet hours the pool of players near you is thinner and lobbies get less predictable. Less predictable is not the same as easier. Activision has published nothing saying difficulty drops off-peak, so treat this as worth a try, not a fix.

Method 3: Use a VPN to change region

A VPN routes your connection through another region, which changes which players count as nearby when the matchmaker builds a lobby. Activision has not published a rule that bans ordinary VPN use, and its enforcement policy never uses the word. It has named “VPN abuse” once: a November 2024 RICOCHET report adjusted ping thresholds so that Ranked Play matches in Black Ops 6 and Warzone happen in your own region. Activision has not said how MW4 will handle this.

The rest of this section is our own experience, not Activision’s. The person who runs this store has played every Call of Duty since 2019 with a VPN on and has not received a ban in that time. There was one spell of limited matchmaking, which lifted, and its cause was never stated. A region change sometimes lands a softer lobby, but far more often the lobby looks just like the one at home. In Black Ops 7 Ranked, a VPN stopped matchmaking from starting at all on our accounts. MW4 Ranked Play is not on the launch roadmap, as our MW4 Ranked Play guide explains.

On PC, MW4’s TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot requirement checks your PC’s security state; Activision has not described it as a region or IP check.

Method 4: Reverse boosting or a fresh account

Reverse boosting means deliberately playing badly so the matchmaker rates you lower. A fresh account has no match performance record of its own yet. Both target the “skill and performance” input in Activision’s diagram above.

The costs are real. Reverse boosting takes matches you would rather not play, and Activision has not said how many it would take or whether it works at all. A fresh account starts at Player Level 1, so it has none of your unlocks; Create-a-Class alone needs Level 4. And Activision’s enforcement policy defines Boosting by purpose: “exploiting the game for the purpose of gaining XP, prestige, game score, weapon level, or in-game unlock.” It has not said whether deliberately lowering your own performance counts.

Method 5: Private Match with bots

Call of Duty does have real bots. In Black Ops 7, Activision’s multiplayer deep dive said Private Match lets you “invite your friends, add bots, and customize the rules.” Activision has not yet detailed Private Match bot options for Modern Warfare 4.

The catch is progression. Activision has not said whether Private Match against bots earns Player XP, weapon XP or camo progress in MW4. If it does not, this is a practice tool, not a grinding method. We will check on launch day.

Method 6: A hosted bot lobby

The last route is paying someone else to set the lobby up. Our listing describes a private Multiplayer lobby against bots, played on your own Activision ID and joined by party invite. It is Coming Soon. What it covers at launch, including how MW4’s progression rules apply, will be stated on the product page when it opens.

Whatever route you choose, the same enforcement policy applies, which is the next question.

Can you get banned for bot lobbies in MW4?

Activision has not ruled on bot lobbies by name. Its Security and Enforcement Policy lists several definitions that could apply, and says violations “are not limited to the infractions listed”:

  • Boosting: “Exploiting the game for the purpose of gaining XP, prestige, game score, weapon level, or in-game unlock.”
  • Spoofing: “Any attempt to hide, disguise, or obfuscate your identity or the identity of your hardware devices.”
  • Circumventing Security: “Any attempt to circumvent our security systems.”

Penalties range from warnings to permanent bans. The one most relevant here is limited matchmaking. Activision says accounts in that state “may not earn progression,” and party members can be affected too. That would cancel exactly what a bot lobby is for.

Our one brush with it is described in the VPN section above: a single spell of limited matchmaking in seven years, with no stated cause. One account’s history is not evidence that any method is safe. Nobody can promise a method is risk-free, and we do not.

Frequently asked questions

Are there real bot lobbies in MW4?

Activision said in January 2024 that Multiplayer “does not use bots as part of the general matchmaking process.” It has not restated this for MW4. Bots have appeared in Private Match in recent Call of Duty games; MW4’s options are not detailed yet.

Does MW4 have an Open matchmaking playlist?

It did in the beta. Whether it ships at launch on October 23 is not confirmed.

Is using a VPN in MW4 bannable?

Activision has no published rule banning ordinary VPN use, but it has named “VPN abuse” and, in 2024, limited Black Ops 6 and Warzone Ranked Play by region. Our store’s owner has used one since 2019 without a ban, with one unexplained spell of limited matchmaking; that is one account’s experience, not a guarantee.

Do you earn XP in a Private Match with bots?

Not confirmed for MW4. Activision has not said whether Private Match progress counts toward Player or weapon levels.

Is there a bot lobby glitch in MW4?

None has been documented, and the game is not out yet. Using a glitch would also fall under the policy’s Glitching definition.

Can you get bot lobbies on console?

Playlist choice and play times apply to console matchmaking too, but whether MW4’s Private Match offers bots on any platform is not confirmed. PlayStation and Xbox have no built-in VPN app, so a VPN would have to run on your router or another device the console connects through.
