MW4 Platinum Camo: How to Unlock It for Every Class

One un-leveled gun can hold back Platinum on its whole class, which is why the grind feels longer than it looks.

To unlock Platinum camo in MW4, first get Gold on every weapon in that class, such as all 8 assault rifles. Then complete that class’s Platinum challenge on each gun, for example 50 headshots against players on an assault rifle, or 100 headshots against enemies in DMZ. Activision says progress can come wholly or partly from either mode.

Platinum is the second of MW4’s four Completionist camos, after Gold and before Harmonic Break and Divergence. The rules below come from Activision’s progression and Prestige post of October 19, 2026, except the per-class numbers, which we mark separately.

How Platinum unlocks in MW4: the Gold gate

Activision lays out the order on each weapon:

  1. Military and Special camos. All eight Military camos and all three Special camos on that weapon open the Completionist camos.
  2. Gold. 15 eliminations in a single Multiplayer match, or 100 eliminations in a single DMZ match.
  3. Platinum. Opens only after you finish every Gold challenge in the same weapon class. Activision’s example: with assault rifles, you need all 8 assault rifle Golds before you can start Platinum on any of them.

So Platinum is a class grind, not a single-gun grind: one weapon without Gold blocks the Platinum challenges for its whole class. Our MW4 weapon unlock levels table lists the weapons in each class.

MW4 Platinum challenges for every weapon class

Activision gives the challenge type for every class, but publishes the numbers only for assault rifles. The other counts below come from the community-run CODMunity MW4 camo tracker, read on October 31, 2026, and are not Activision figures. We could read one sample weapon per class, named in the table; the other weapons in each class have not been checked one by one. Launchers and melee were not in the part of the tracker we could read, so their counts are not confirmed. Multiplayer counts are kills against players; DMZ counts are kills against enemies.

* Activision describes the LMG Platinum challenge as kills without dying. The CODMunity tracker’s DMZ version says without taking damage instead, which is a stricter condition. We have not been able to check which wording the game uses in DMZ.

Weapon counts per class are from our launch weapon list. Our earlier camo challenges guide listed 125 hipfire kills for shotgun Platinum; the CODMunity tracker shows 125 as the DMZ count and 50 as the Multiplayer count.

Multiplayer or DMZ for Platinum?

Activision says you can complete a Platinum challenge “wholly or partly in Multiplayer or DMZ”. On the assault rifle example, that is 50 headshots against players in Multiplayer or 100 headshots against enemies in DMZ. Activision does not explain how partial progress from the two modes combines, so that is not confirmed.

The DMZ counts are higher, but they are against enemies rather than other players. Activision has not published any data on which mode is faster, so we are not ranking them. Three patch-note items matter for Platinum:

  • On October 28, Infinity Ward listed a known issue where the Patriot XMR Platinum challenge does not track correctly in the UI. It says the challenge “can still be completed and progressed” anyway.
  • The October 29 update fixed certain squadmate actions not counting toward DMZ Mastery Camo challenges.
  • The October 30 update fixed Platinum progress for marksman rifles not displaying correctly on PC.

These changes are in the MW4 launch patch notes, and our MW4 October 30 update covers the rest of those changes.

What comes after Platinum

Harmonic Break is a bigger gate. Activision says you must finish the Platinum challenges on all 33 weapons before any Harmonic Break challenge opens. Divergence follows after 33 Harmonic Break challenges, and it unlocks the first Mastery camo challenges. The full Mastery camo track is in our MW4 Mastery camos guide.

Season 1 adds the Cronen Osprey assault rifle and the CSG-35 SMG on November 6. Activision has not said whether new weapons are added to the Gold count you need for Platinum, or to the 33 needed for Harmonic Break, so that is not confirmed.

Frequently asked questions

How many Gold camos do you need for Platinum in MW4?

Every Gold in that weapon class. For assault rifles that is all 8, per Activision’s own example.

What is the pistol Platinum challenge in MW4?

Kills from behind. For the SANG 9mm, the CODMunity tracker lists 20 kills against players in Multiplayer or 75 against enemies in DMZ. The other pistols have not been checked one by one, and Activision has not published the pistol numbers.

Can you do Platinum camo challenges in DMZ?

Yes. Activision says Platinum can be completed wholly or partly in Multiplayer or DMZ, with higher counts in DMZ.

What camo comes after Platinum?

Harmonic Break, which opens only after Platinum is done on all 33 weapons. Divergence follows after 33 Harmonic Break challenges.

Do Season 1 weapons count toward Platinum?

Not confirmed. Activision has not said whether the Cronen Osprey and CSG-35 change the Gold or Platinum counts.
