The Modern Warfare 4 launch patch notes, posted by Infinity Ward on October 21, 2026, retune every weapon after the beta, keep Tactical Sprint locked to the Blood Rush perk, buff Battle Hardened and Resupply, raise UAV health from 100 to 150 and keep the higher beta killstreak costs. Weekly Challenges are gone for Season 1, replaced by events.

Everything below comes from Activision’s Modern Warfare 4 launch patch notes, published on October 21, 2026 ahead of the October 23 launch. The full launch timetable is in our MW4 release date guide.

Infinity Ward says the TTK, or time to kill, from the second beta weekend stays for launch because players at all skill levels preferred it. The work since then went into balance between weapons rather than the overall pace.

Weapon tuning and weapon progression changes

All 33 launch weapons got what Infinity Ward calls a deep balance pass. SMGs are now “more efficient in close to mid-range combat”, and powerful one-hit-kill weapons are tempered through flinch and damage changes. Attachments were tuned as well, and Advanced Weapon Stats are in the game from day one, so you can compare numbers in Gunsmith. The patch notes do not list per-weapon values.

Weapon progression now shows which attachments you will unlock rather than bare weapon levels, and the post-match screen makes it clearer when shared attachments let you skip levels. Shared attachments unlock once and work on every weapon that can use them. Which guns unlock at which player level is in our MW4 weapon unlock levels table.

Weapon Prestige is in at launch. The patch notes say prestiging a weapon locks all attachments on that gun, including shared ones, while those attachments stay unlocked on your other weapons. The Apex exception and the four Pyroclast camos are covered in our MW4 Weapon Prestige guide. If you want a gun at Max Level without the climb, our MW4 weapon leveling covers that part.

Two smaller Gunsmith features also arrive. Optic Rail Placement lets you slide an optic along the rail to change the sight picture; it is purely cosmetic. Thermal optics now get a different thermal effect when you equip a custom reticle on them.

Perk changes and Tactical Sprint in MW4

The perk list was reshuffled after the beta. The launch layout is:

  • Perk 1: Quick Fix, Overkill, High Alert, Ghost, Resupply, Kill Chain
  • Perk 2: Hardline, Blood Rush, Bomb Squad, Fast Hands, Ninja, Birdseye
  • Perk 3: Lethal Reach, Combat Grid, Battle Hardened, Scavenger, Tracker, Cold-Blooded

Three perks were buffed:

  • Battle Hardened now more effectively negates most effects of tactical grenades such as the Flash, Concussion and Screamer Mine.
  • Resupply gives you your first equipment recharge faster.
  • Blood Rush now triggers Tactical Sprint automatically when you press sprint.

Tactical Sprint is still not available by default. It lives on Blood Rush, which moved to the second perk tier. Because you spend a perk slot on it, Infinity Ward removed the extra “sprint out” penalty that Tac Sprint usually carries. The default input is “single tap run”, so with Blood Rush equipped you Tac Sprint for as long as stamina lasts; “double tap” and “single tap sprint” remain in Movement Advanced Settings. Unlock levels for every perk are in our MW4 perks list.

Killstreak changes: UAV cost and health

The higher killstreak costs tested in the second beta weekend stay for launch. The patch notes give one example: the UAV costs 5 kills, or 4 with the Hardline perk. Killstreaks are set per loadout, and objective play such as capturing a point in Domination also fills the meter.

That UAV number does not match Activision’s own October 19 loadout post, which lists the UAV at 4 kills, and the pre-launch Create-a-Class screenshot below also shows a 4. Activision has not said which figure is current, and the patch notes give no other streak costs. Our MW4 killstreaks list carries the October 19 table with this conflict noted.

Two streaks changed:

  • UAV health goes from 100 to 150, after feedback that UAVs were too easy to shoot down once the beta had lowered their health.
  • Wheelson pathing and targeting were reworked to be more aggressive and less confused when targets switch quickly.

The patch notes also fix a bug where the killstreak counter could reset after using the Argonaut, and improve the audio of the Nuke sequence. They do not list the Nuke’s requirement; what has been reported is in our MW4 Nuke guide.

Equipment, maps and modes at launch

The only equipment change listed is a small cut to the effective range and duration of the Flash and Concussion grenades. Create-a-Class has 9 Tacticals, 11 Lethals and 12 Field Upgrades at launch, and Create-a-Class itself opens at Player Level 4.

Multiplayer launches with 20 maps: 12 Core 6v6 maps, three Ground War maps, four Gunfight maps and Kill Block. The Core maps are Cachette, Coal, Lithium, Lotus, Mumbai, Munition, Nautical, Reactor U92, Rooftops, Sentry, Silkworm and Transit 213. Kill Block supports 3v3 and 10v10 Gunfight at launch, with 6v6 modes promised after launch.

The four new modes at launch are Inflation, Hijack, Collateral and Combat Outpost; Infected and the new Possession mode follow the week after launch. Rules for the new modes are in our MW4 new modes guide, and the full map list with dates is in MW4 maps at launch.

Camos, Prestige and the end of Weekly Challenges

Camo progress is shared across Multiplayer, DMZ and, from Season 1, Warzone. Special Camo Challenges adjust to the mode you are playing, and once you finish one in any mode, that camo is unlocked in all of them. Reticles are also earned per optic, in several colour variations.

The bigger change is to challenges. Weekly Challenges will not be in Season 1. Infinity Ward is running events instead, with rewards such as Apex attachments, camos, calling cards and Operator skins, and some events will recur so players who miss a track get another chance. The first event starts on launch day. Weapon levels are still the base of the camo grind; how they unlock is in our MW4 Military Camos guide.

DMZ and Campaign fixes in the launch patch

Most of the bug-fix list is for DMZ, which has been in Early Access since October 20. Fixes shipped on October 20 and 21 include:

  • A crash when breaching the door in the Breaking New Ground mission, plus other crashes.
  • The After-Action Report showing 0 XP after a player’s first match.
  • The ISO Apex attachment not working in DMZ.
  • Only the player who landed the final blow on a Commander getting XP and “King Slayer” calling card progress.
  • A soft lock after selling starting equipment or dismissing Active Duty Operators before the first deployment.
  • An error when opening the Dog Tag Case, and AI enemies running over players during infiltration in NK Wilderness.

Multiplayer gets a fix for a server crash during matches and for match completion events not being recorded. The Campaign gets a fix for a progression blocker in the Hotel sequence of the mission Counter Attack. Issues that are still open are tracked on Infinity Ward’s Modern Warfare 4 Trello board. At launch it lists a Weapon Prestige bug that relocks Military Camos and Apex attachments, and a DMZ issue blocking some Operator Prestiges; the DMZ level track is in our MW4 DMZ level unlocks list.
