Weapon Prestige in Modern Warfare 4 opens once a gun hits its Max Level. Entering it resets that gun to Level 1 and unlocks Pyroclast right away. Max it again for Pyroclast Terminus, which moves the weapon into Prestige Master, where Pyroclast Scatter unlocks at Master Level 150 and Pyroclast Cascade at Master Level 250.

Every rule and camo name below comes from Activision’s Ready for Launch progression post of October 19, 2026. Weapon Prestige is separate from the player Prestige system covered in our Classic vs Regular Prestige guide: it works gun by gun, and it is optional.

All 4 Pyroclast camos and how to unlock them

Activision describes the four Weapon Prestige camos as stages of one evolving camo called Pyroclast. Each weapon earns its own set.

One name does not match older material. The August showcase used the name Pyroclast Verge; the October 19 post lists Pyroclast Terminus. Activision has not explicitly confirmed whether Terminus replaces Verge. This guide uses Terminus because it is the name in the newer launch post; our MW4 mastery camos guide covers the rest of the camo track.

All four come from Weapon XP on that one gun; there is no challenge list attached. If you would rather skip the first climb to Max Level, that is the part our weapon leveling service covers.

How MW4 Weapon Prestige works, step by step

  1. Level the weapon. Use it in Multiplayer or DMZ to earn Weapon XP. Each new level unlocks an attachment in Gunsmith.
  2. Reach Max Level. The game then offers you the option to enter Weapon Prestige. It is a choice, not automatic.
  3. Enter Weapon Prestige 1. The weapon drops back to Level 1 and you unlock Pyroclast immediately.
  4. Level it to Max again. That unlocks Pyroclast Terminus and moves the weapon straight into Weapon Prestige Master.
  5. Keep levelling in Prestige Master. The level no longer resets. Pyroclast Scatter unlocks at Master Level 150 and Pyroclast Cascade at Master Level 250.

Each stage also changes the weapon’s icon. Entering Weapon Prestige adds a Prestige icon in Gunsmith and on the Killcam, and Prestige Master adds a second, Master icon.

Weapon levels continue without resetting when you enter Weapon Prestige Master. Activision has not published the XP requirements needed to reach Levels 150 and 250.

What you lose when you Prestige a weapon

Entering Weapon Prestige relocks that gun’s attachments. A few things are protected, according to Activision:

  • Kept: Apex attachments and attachments that come from Weapon Blueprints.
  • Kept: Blueprints, camos, reticles, accessories, decals and stickers on the weapon.
  • Not affected: Shared attachments on your other weapons. Prestiging one gun does not relock them elsewhere.
  • Relocked: every other attachment on the prestiged weapon, until you level it back up.

There is one small wording difference. The blog says the level resets “back to 1”, while the in-game screen in Activision’s own screenshot says “back to zero”. Either way, you start the weapon’s level track again from the bottom.

Because Apex attachments survive, it is worth reaching a weapon’s Apex unlock before you Prestige it. Our MW4 Apex attachments guide explains how those unlock.

Weapon Max Level in MW4: not the same for every gun

“Max Level” is a different number per weapon. Activision has not published a full table, but the weapon select screen in its October 19 post shows the caps for five assault rifles:

WeaponMax level shown
Han 8672
M472
Patriot XMR72
Hyeon Burst68
Kastov 76268

These come from a pre-launch screenshot, so treat them as provisional until the game is out. Caps for the other launch weapons are not confirmed. When each gun becomes available in the first place is in our MW4 weapon unlock levels list.

How long does MW4 Weapon Prestige take?

Image: Activision, Modern Warfare 4 Progression and Prestige post, October 19, 2026

Nobody can say yet. Activision has not published how much Weapon XP each level needs, and there is no launch-day testing to measure it. What is certain is the shape of the grind: one full climb to Max Level, a second full climb inside Weapon Prestige 1, then Master levels up to 250 for Cascade.

Activision’s one tip is to use Double Weapon XP Tokens throughout the process. Weapon XP comes from Multiplayer and DMZ; Warzone joins Modern Warfare 4 with Season 1 on November 6, and the post does not say whether Warzone play will count. General XP advice is in our guide to levelling up fast in MW4.

Pyroclast is also separate from the mastery camo track (Gold and the camos after it), which is earned through camo challenges rather than weapon levels. Those requirements are in our MW4 camo challenges list.

MW4 weapon leveling services

Weapon Prestige is a long levelling grind repeated per gun. These are the matching services on our Modern Warfare 4 boosting page.

Frequently asked questions

When can you Prestige a weapon in MW4?

Once that weapon reaches its Max Level. The option then appears; entering it is up to you.

What is the MW4 Weapon Prestige camo?

Pyroclast. It has four stages: Pyroclast, Pyroclast Terminus, Pyroclast Scatter and Pyroclast Cascade.

Do you lose attachments when you Prestige a weapon?

Yes, on that weapon, except Apex attachments and Blueprint attachments. Shared attachments on other guns stay unlocked, and cosmetics such as camos and reticles are kept.

Is there more than one Weapon Prestige level?

Activision describes Weapon Prestige 1 and then Weapon Prestige Master. Master does not reset the weapon level; you keep levelling to unlock Scatter at 150 and Cascade at 250.

What is the max weapon level in MW4?

It depends on the gun. Activision’s pre-launch screenshot shows 72 for the Han 86, M4 and Patriot XMR and 68 for the Hyeon Burst and Kastov 762. Other caps are not confirmed.

Is Pyroclast Verge the same as Pyroclast Terminus?

Not confirmed. The August showcase used the name Pyroclast Verge; the October 19 post lists Pyroclast Terminus, and Activision has not explicitly confirmed whether Terminus replaces Verge.
