How to Unlock Attachments Fast in MW4

Attachments in MW4 unlock once for every gun that can use them, and owned parts turn into skipped levels. Here is how to use that to level guns faster.

To unlock attachments fast in MW4, use the shared attachment system. Every weapon level unlocks one attachment, each attachment unlocks only once for every gun that can use it, and a level that would give you an attachment you already own is skipped with a Bonus Level Up. The more guns you level, the faster each new one goes.

The rules below come from Activision’s two Ready for Launch posts of October 19, 2026, on Gunsmith and attachments and on progression, plus the October 21 launch patch notes. Activision has not published how much Weapon XP each level needs, so this guide explains the system rather than giving hours.

How attachments unlock in MW4

Attachments in Modern Warfare 4 come from Weapon XP. Use a gun in Multiplayer or DMZ and it levels up; every level unlocks one new attachment for that gun in Gunsmith. Activision’s example is the Han 86 assault rifle, which goes from Level 1 to a Max Level of 72.

What changed from older Call of Duty games is that attachments are shared. Activision lists the rules this way:

  • Each attachment is unlocked only once. After that it is available on every weapon that can use it.
  • Each weapon can still unlock every attachment available to it, so you never have to switch guns to get a part for your favourite one.
  • If a weapon reaches a level that would award an attachment you already own, that level is skipped with a Bonus Level Up.

The launch patch notes sum it up as “no redundant unlocks”: weapon progression speeds up with every shared attachment you have earned. If you would rather not do the first climb yourself, our MW4 weapon leveling takes a gun to Max Level.

How to unlock attachments faster with shared unlocks

Because owned attachments turn into skipped levels, the order you level guns in matters. These steps follow directly from Activision’s rules:

  1. Level one gun deep first. Every attachment it unlocks is also unlocked for other guns that use the same part.
  2. Move to guns that share those parts. When their level track reaches an attachment you already own, the game gives you a Bonus Level Up instead.
  3. Keep levelling new guns. Activision’s own wording is that the more attachments you unlock, the more are ready when you pick up a new weapon.

Activision has not published which attachments each gun shares, so it is not confirmed which pairs of weapons save the most levels. The post-match screen now shows when progress was skipped through shared attachments, which is the quickest way to see it for yourself. Which gun unlocks at which player level is in our MW4 weapon unlock levels table.

Where to earn Weapon XP for attachments

Weapon XP comes from Multiplayer and DMZ at launch. Warzone joins Modern Warfare 4 with Season 1 on November 6; Activision says Warzone counts for Player XP and camos from then, and its weapon levelling description names only Multiplayer and DMZ.

  • Multiplayer: attachments you unlock are usable in every Multiplayer loadout straight away.
  • DMZ: weapon levels and attachments earned there carry over to Multiplayer. Activision’s tip before launch was to start the attachment grind in DMZ Early Access for exactly that reason.
  • Using them in DMZ: any weapon or attachment you have unlocked in either mode can be bought at the DMZ Gunsmith station, but you pay DMZ Cash for it each time.

Activision’s only speed tip for weapons is to run Double Weapon XP tokens. The Campaign gives two of them as completion rewards, as covered in our MW4 Campaign rewards guide. Player-level XP sources such as Daily Challenges are in how to level up fast in MW4. Many players also look for a Modern Warfare 4 bot lobby to grind weapon levels against easier opponents; what Activision says about the methods is in our bot lobby guide.

Apex attachments: the last unlock on each gun

Apex attachments are a separate tier. Activision says they unlock as the final reward for fully levelling a supported weapon, and they do not take up one of the normal attachment slots. That means the shared-attachment shortcut helps you reach them sooner, but you still have to take each gun to its Max Level.

Activision’s screenshot also shows that an Apex attachment can block some normal slots on the weapon, so check the Gunsmith before you build around it. The full list of Apex attachments by weapon is in our MW4 Apex attachments guide.

Weapon Prestige relocks attachments on that gun

Once a gun hits Max Level you can choose Weapon Prestige. Doing so resets that gun to Level 1 and relocks its attachments, including shared ones, on that gun only. Activision says Apex attachments and Weapon Blueprint attachments are kept, and shared attachments stay unlocked on every gun you have not prestiged.

At launch, Infinity Ward’s Trello board lists an open issue where Military Camos and Apex attachments relock after prestiging a weapon, along with in-game text wrongly saying Apex access will be lost. Until that card is marked fixed, keep it in mind before you prestige a gun. The camo rewards for doing it are in our MW4 Weapon Prestige guide.

Frequently asked questions

Are attachments shared between weapons in MW4?

Yes. Each attachment unlocks once and is then available on every weapon that can use it.

What is a Bonus Level Up in MW4?

When a weapon reaches a level whose reward is an attachment you already own, that level is skipped. Activision calls this a Bonus Level Up.

Do DMZ weapon levels count in Multiplayer?

Yes. Weapon levels and attachments earned in DMZ carry over to Multiplayer.

How many weapon levels does a gun have in MW4?

It depends on the gun. The Han 86 goes to 72; the Sang 9mm pistol tops out at 38. A full list of caps is not published.

Does Weapon Prestige remove attachments from other guns?

No. Prestiging relocks attachments on that one gun only. Shared attachments stay unlocked on your other weapons.

How long does it take to unlock every attachment in MW4?

Not confirmed. Activision has not published the Weapon XP needed per level.
