Modern Warfare 4 has two Prestige paths, chosen after Level 55 and again at every new Prestige level. Classic Prestige resets level unlocks and Create-a-Class progress for a 20% XP boost, one Permanent Unlock Token and bonus cosmetic rewards. Regular Prestige sends you back to Level 1 but keeps your unlocks and classes. There are 10 Prestige levels, then 1,000 Prestige Master levels.

Both paths come from Activision’s Call of Duty: NEXT multiplayer blog of August 21, 2026, which calls the system “Classic Prestige Returns — With More Player Choice”. The numbers come from Activision’s Ready for Launch progression post of October 19, 2026. Anything neither post gives is marked Not confirmed.

In Activision’s words, Classic Prestige is “the traditional reset experience”, while Regular Prestige “returns you to Level 1 while retaining your Create-a-Class unlocks”. Both “feature their own rewards and milestones”. The October 19 post adds the numbers: Classic gives a 20% XP boost, one Permanent Unlock Token and bonus cosmetic rewards, and a majority of Prestige rewards are shared by both paths. The token permanently unlocks one Level Unlock item of your choice; Activision’s example is spending it on the Throwing Knife rather than reaching Level 48 again after a Classic reset. Our MW4 perks list shows the perk unlocks a Classic reset takes back to Level 1.

Either way, Prestige means levelling from 1 again. If you want the levels done for you, our Modern Warfare 4 boosting page lists Prestige and rank services.

Which MW4 Prestige path should you pick?

Activision frames it as a choice of play style rather than a right answer. Based only on the differences above:

  • Pick Classic if you want the exclusive Prestige rewards, the higher XP rates and a shot at Prestige mastery, and you do not mind rebuilding your level unlocks and classes each time.
  • Pick Regular if you want to keep your level unlocks and Create-a-Class content and still earn a subset of Prestige rewards along the way.

You are not locked in. The choice appears when you complete Level 55, and Activision says you get it again each time you enter a new Prestige level, so you can pick Classic for one Prestige and Regular for the next.

MW4 level cap and how DMZ XP counts

Activision’s DMZ guide of October 9, 2026 names the standard track as the “Level 1–55 Player Progression”. Completing Level 55 is where the Prestige choice appears, and MW4 has 10 Prestige levels followed by 1,000 Prestige Master levels, per the October 19 post. The same post says XP from DMZ’s separate Level 1–70 track “also contributes to your overall 1-55 Player Progression”, while XP from Multiplayer or Warzone does not count toward your DMZ level. Ranked Play is a separate mode with no MW4 date yet; our MW4 Ranked Play guide tracks it. Our guide on how to level up fast in MW4 covers the confirmed XP sources.

DMZ Early Access opened on October 20 for digital pre-orders, three days before Multiplayer. Whether XP earned during that Early Access carries into launch, and whether you can Prestige from inside DMZ, are both Not confirmed. DMZ also has its own separate Operator Prestige, which Activision says is separate from both tracks.

What Prestige does not reset in MW4

Weapon progress is a separate system. Activision’s blog says the new Weapon Progression “cuts down on redundant unlocks”: an attachment unlocked once stays available as you move from weapon to weapon. Each weapon also has its own Camo Track shared across Multiplayer, DMZ and Warzone, covered in our MW4 mastery camos guide. Whether Classic Prestige resets weapon levels or camos is Not confirmed.

Our free MW4 camo tracker lists each weapon’s pre-launch camo challenges and lets you tick them off as you go.

DMZ Operator Prestige has its own requirements; see our DMZ Operator Prestige guide.

The Pyroclast camos are not player Prestige rewards. Activision’s October 19 post ties them to Weapon Prestige, which each gun offers once it reaches Max Level: Pyroclast at Weapon Prestige 1 Level 1, Pyroclast Terminus at Weapon Prestige 1 Max Level, Pyroclast Scatter at Weapon Prestige Master Level 150 and Pyroclast Cascade at Weapon Prestige Master Level 250. The August showcase used the name Pyroclast Verge; the October 19 post lists Pyroclast Terminus. Activision has not explicitly confirmed whether Terminus replaces Verge. The full rules are in our MW4 Weapon Prestige guide.
